Although the U. S. Code legally establishes today as “Washington’s Birthday,” it’s not a happy B-day for parents who are juggling child care. In this Post-Occupy world, I’m hearing more vocal complaints about school schedules.
Many parents will burn through valuable vacation days today and during upcoming spring breaks, early dismissal days and conference dates.
Few school districts offer system-wide options that include academic enrichment opportunities that could directly benefit students and reduce stress on parents. As a result, too many moms and dads pull together alternatives, which usually include too much screen time for out-of-school kids.
Right now, school board members and administrators are deciding on 2012-2013 school calendars. This is also a good time to consider ways to help parents avoid off-day scrambling.
