A real head start

Today, students enter what I call, “the heart of the year.”   Teachers have spent most of the previous months reviewing previous skills and preparing students to learn new content.  This new season of school begins with the new year.

As I thought about this day, my mind went back to data released exactly two months ago:  two-thirds of kindergarten teachers say children are unprepared for school. (Link below)

This doesn’t mean that parents should spend money on workbooks and time drilling a child with flash cards.  It does mean we need to make sure young children are surrounded by language, have many experiences and live with nurturing adults who help them make sure of those experiences.
