As we move closer to the opening of school, some parents are getting desperate in their attempts to help their kids finish required summer reading….so desperate, they are paying kids to read.
Part of me wants to congratulate those moms and dads for caring so much. After all, avoiding the summer slump in academic skills does make a difference.
But another part of me says, “At the beginning of Summer 2014, set aside 20 minutes everyday when everyone in the family reads. Using print or pixels, kids might come away from the summer knowing the joy of reading.”
