More activity, higher grades

Two major shifts in the school day emerged during the first semester of this school year: more focus on basic academic skills and more opportunities for students to be physically active.

The focus on academics is obviously linked to Common Core; the emphasis on exercise reflects Michelle Obama’s efforts. The importance of her “Let’s move” campaign is supported by recent research from the U.K. According to research published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, students who were active for 60 minutes a day raised their average grade from C to B. As mid-year grade reports come home, this is a good time to check your child’s school schedule for the amount of physical activity that is build into his day.
