Each year, I address the issue of summer slide: the loss of children’s academic skills (math and reading) during the summer.
The problem is real, and has been documented repeatedly.
Yet according to the recently released survey results by Reading Is Fundamental and Macy’s (who sponsor an annual Be Book Smart Campaign for children’s literacy) 60% of parents don’t believe the numbers!
Sixty percent of parents surveyed don’t believe their children lose literacy skills due to a lack of summer reading! The survey also revealed kids spend nearly three times as many summer hours playing video games or watching TV than they spend reading.
Will this be the first summer without a downward slide in skills? We can always hope…
