Mirrors and windows

A group of children’s booksellers recently discussed diversity in children’s books. Their conversation was summarized by the need for “less talk and more action.”

The definition of diversity is expanding beyond the original use of the term that related only to race. And yet race is still important.

I scoured stores this season, looking for a picture book of the First Christmas that included people the color of our grandson, who was adopted from Ethiopia. Solomon deserves to open a book that is a window, but also one that is a mirror.
