Mid-way through this first year of implementing the Common Core State Standards, it appears that math homework has generated the most frustration from parents.

“Simple arithmetic” is no longer as easy as adding concrete numbers, at least that’s according to parents with whom I’ve spoken.

The experts say students should not only learn to solve problems, but understand how numbers relate to each other. Parents are quick to note this resurgence of the “fuzzy math” from the 1990’s has increased their frustration in trying to help their kids and decreased their student’s understanding of math facts.

I don’t anticipate a quick solution.
