An increasing number of hospitals are certified as baby-friendly, but the statistics are rising only ever so slowly. With all the competition for patients, I would have thought the movement would have gained more traction by now.
A certified hospital has adopted ten practices that has been research-proven to promote optimal level of care for bonding and feeding, including skin-to-skin contact between mother and infant in the first hour of life and rooming in for 23 hours daily. This is a global initiative from the WHO (World Health Organization.)
Currently, 215 hospitals and birthing centers in the US are certified as baby friendly.
